This is a very interesting discussion ...what does distinguish an animal as a pet and what does that actually mean to you? Hmmm, well I do have pets dog and cats and I keep fish also.
I guess if pressed I'd have to say they are pets even though I don't call them that or really think of them in the same way I do my dog and cat. A pet to me is any animal that you keep and maintain its environment and see to their health even if they don't ask for affection like a dog or cat so yes my fish are pets.
However if something happened to my dog I'd cry for weeks and mourn forever however if one of my pet fishes dies I would be very disappointed and mourn the loss of one of my beautiful fishes miss their offspring and beauty but I wouldn't cry.... so there is a difference.
