Anyone keep these guys? I was thinking of getting some but I'm unsure of temperment and care. The ones I was thinking of are Thai imports. Any thoughts?

??? are you talking about plakats in general or is this something different?

Get the ones bred as fighters?.
If that's what you want, I'd check aquabid and ask a few sellers. Hopefully you can locate some that way, good luck.

If it's just fish bred as fighters, that the plakats. And I wouldn't go for Thai imports. They're WAY over-rated IMO and most people wind up paying crazy high shipping costs. The Thai breeder will tell you that shipping is $5 per fish to the trans-shipper, but once it hits the trans-shipper, shipping the rest of the way can cost $45-60 bucks easily. Do you really want to pay that much for a $12 fish?

You're in CA, there are a lot of betta breeders there. Start doing some google searches. Start paying attention to the bettas sellers on Aquabid and their locations. I know I found one guy - think he's in oh, near Bakersfield, that breeds giants, plakats and a bunch of wild species of bettas. Shipping from there to you would be way less than from Thailand and he had some really nice fish.

And I know he's not the only one. There are a TON of betta breeders in CA.

That's more of an issue with the transshippers than the Thai breeders IMO. Plus, it's relatively easy to fix buy buying enough fish at once to defray the transshipping cost.

Arak, are you actually buying these fish for fighting purposes? Those bred for that are specifically chosen based on increased agression, stockier, build, thicker scales, and stronger jaws. Those breeeders take that work very seriously, and it reflects in the price of the fish. Granted, many can look at 2 fish and not see the varying amounts of work that went into producing them, but it doesn't mean it's not there. As far as Thai bettas being over-rated, I've yet to see a US breeder who is able to crank out the amount of high quality bettas in the amount of differing fin/color varieties as the SE Asian breeders do, and even when they get the occasional fish that is truly exceptional, they wan't an exhorbitant amount of money as well. By the very nature of cheap labor, abundant food, abundant land, and perfect climate, their betta breeding endeavors will always far surpass ours, and in terms of the general quality of the fancier breeds at least, theres really no competiton, and in terms of plakat, where the US market is relatively weak, the situation is only worse.

A client wanted them, but to get some I have to order a substantial ammount so I figured I'd keep some of them for a while as see how I like them. I have someone in Thailand who will wholesale them to me so I'm not going through a random guy but it's someone I trust. No, I'm not going to fight them.

A local guy I know gets 'em in cheap from Thailand, but he order's like 1200 at a time!

Those are probably just the regular bettas, the one's I'm refering to are bred FOR battle

They are a mix, I haven't been that interested to ask the ratios, but I would guess based on observations that about 1/2 are normals and the rest are various fighters. From what I understand he is the go-to guy in town for fighters

1200 arena class fighters is prolly big bucks
