Ok, So i know everyone here probably now thinks im a horrible fish keeper, because of how i keep my bettas, but they are happy, most of them i have had for almost 3 years, they get water changes every other day, and i have never had any problems with ick, fugus, or any other disease. I wouldnt keep my bettas in bowls, if they werent happy in them. They dont like being in larger amounts of space, i have one who cant stand being in the bowls, so he stays in the 25 Gallon community. The rest of them become slow moving, and sad looking in anything bigger then their homes now. I know how to take care of my fish, and i know im only 15 years old but my dad breeds bettas, i grew up having bettas, I just dont want people thinking i dont know how to take care of my fish, or that im a bad fish keeper. My Bettas are perfectly happy.

its all about knowing your fish, as for me my bettas are in commnity tanks, however there is one that hates other fish and would be happier in a ttank by himself but I dont have one atm. I will be getting one for him

OK. Thanks. Thats exactly how mine are exept they hate being in big amounts of water, even if no other fish are present.

the only reason i dont like how people keep them in bowls is because...

1. No filtration (yes you do every other day water changes but that puts the fish under stress and and....um well i just like filters )

2. Low temp, i know they can be kept at or around 73* but they should really be in a 78*-82* envirement

3. No room to swim ( i have never heard of a betta not liking more space or any fish at that matter )

Thats why i keep my bettas in 5 gallon tanks with filters, heaters, and they still have a good amount of room to swim...

anyways that was my .02

overall though you are one of the few that keep up the water changes every other day and for that i call you a good fishkeeper and i also understand your age predictament since i am 16.

Did someone give you a hard time(on AC) about this or do you just want to discuss this particular topic?

WOW i would like to see the offspring

if you want the history on this post check out betta luvin's memberpage and read her previous posts

the thing is BL yes of course the fish are going to be weirded out and lathargic at first b/c of the huge change and thier inexpirience with room to move.

if your gave them the chance to settle in they would be just fine in the larger tank. A week or 2 and their timid behavior would be a thing of the past. i promise you. i have a betta in a 20 long right now and he never stops moving, i have another in a 10 gallon who cruises areound surveying my office like it's his little kingdom- they deserve to be able to strech thier fins

have you heard about the university who did an expiriment with bettas- excersized them everyday and kept them in larger tanks (5-10 gallons i think) they had bettas who were 7-8 years old and still going

it's like if you put a horse in a stall and never take it out for excersize, one day you put it out in the field- the horse is going to paw the ground and get as close to the barn as it can but by the end of the week that horse is going to be running laps happy frolicking about

take me sitting behind a desk all day and never using any muscles but my fingers- i started running again last week and i HATE it but i know once i've been at it again for a while it will give me the same exhilaration it used to.

that's my $0.25

cheers-Kyle

It is also possible if tank mates were involved that the bettas were unhappy because of that. I find it very hard to believe that there are some bettas who hate being in anything larger than a bowl. Even the largest aquarium is nowhere near as big as the rice paddies that bettas live in in the wild! So if the bettas disliked the tanks it must have been due to some other factor than the increased space, e.g. tankmates, too much current from the filter, lack of hiding places, etc.

How can you tell that they have BECOME slow moving and sad looking when you move them to a bigger tank? Do they frolick around in the tiny little bowls you have them in now? From what I saw, they didnt have anywhere to swim at all so how are you going to tell when they become slow moving? I really just dont get that reasoning. From the pics I saw, the bettas in the bowls were pretty sad looking. My betta hid for a couple of days in my 55g but I can tell you that he is very happy now and looks 100% happier than he did in the cup he was living it at Petco, which is probably the same size as the bowls you keep yours now. Sorry to give you a hard time, but I just tell it like I see it. If you want to live up to your name, your bettas should have a MINIMUM of 1g to live in. That is an absolute minimum.
