Well, a buddy of mine came over and suggested that captain cranky pants may be an astronotus crassipinnis. Any oscar experts on aC that can give an opinion?

Hmmm......he could be one. I'd like to see what he looks like when you've had him a year. A. crassipinnis usually have a more longer profile but his coloring fits the bill.
I can't see the pics because I'm at work (photobucket). It's pretty hard to distinguish between the two. I know ocellatus has two spots on the base of its dorsal fin, and crassipinnis does not.

I'm going to say he's Astronotus ocellatus judging by the 2nd pic of him in this thread

just took some more, hopefully clearer pics, though i think you are probably right. i would like to learn more, so teach me 
hmm, well they are ALL totally blurry, LOL...he has a new habit of turning to face me whenever I am near the tank...makes it difficult to get side shots.
