At a loss for words

That sucks. Did ML move to china or somethin? Well, whatever the issue i have not used a ML heater ever, i dont know why, i just havent. Although i have had heater failures in the past they were usually in/during times when i was nearby and did not lose fish. Stupid heaters, maybe ML will have a callback on the heaters? I hope the tang makes it, i know how upset i would feel if my largest goldfish was to die (he survived am incident that killed all the other fish in his tank) or if my smaller male Mollie was to die (he is the only mollie that survived my tank from birth to breeding, and a symbol of my success with mollies). Good Luck with your fish!

That is different than purposefully selling a used heater that you suspect could not work to someone because you don't want to deal with the problems.

At the very least inform the potential buyer that these heaters have a history of not working.

precisely. Suggesting that someone discontinue use of their equipment due to potential defects but to sell it to someone else in the hobby... why pass the buck? that's bad business, bad friendship, and bad overall.

update

wife called. the tomini is swimming about but a bit of a struggle.. the hippo is up but hiding. the clowns are together and huddled

the chromis are just gone and the coral beauty is able to swim but struggles to remain upright
no word from marineland

i had one fail about six months ago,, luckily it was my turtle tank,, couple big cichilds.. no losses,, whew... thats the only heater ive ever had that failed like that..
most expensive too...

I like the Rena Smart Heater for turtles and large fish. It also has a plastic body, and my experience with their reliability has been excellent. Plus if you're running a canister the heater can take the place of the intake strainer and part of the intake tube. I like 'em!

Just a quick question. Do you really need a heater on the SW tank?
When I had SW tanks I never used heaters. I used a chiller to keep the water cooler. I guess it might have been because I live in S Florida and was using metal halide.

Dang, Star! Unfortunately, I know all to well about heaters failing in the on position. That's why you won't catch me without some sort of secondary control device on a heater. I personally use a Ranco controller, which IME, you can't beat in terms of accuracy, dependability, and durability. The next best thing (and a better value, I suppose, in terms of overall capability, since it controls other things) is a ReefKeeper Lite.

First of all I'm sorry for you troubles.

Did you have a two heater set up? I like the idea of using two heaters of a lower wattage to heat the tank. If one fails too hot it might not have enough capacity to cook the fish and if one fails off then the other heater will keep the water from dropping too low. The likelyhood of two heaters failing the same way at the same time is virtually impossible.

Great information about the heaters.
