I went to the local fish club auction today. I was looking for something to fill my 29, specifically shellies. Well, they didn't have any multis... but they had some other little cichlids I was interested in.

Archocentrus myrnae and archocentrus nanoluteus. Of course, I knew immediately what they were and figured they probably came from Rapps at some point :perv: I wanted the a. nanoluteus but was outbid. Man that guy was mad :evil_lol: He thought he was going to get them for $15 and I drove the price up to $31. But he won the brown acaras I was going after last auction, so turn about is fair play, right?

So after waiting through a ridiculous amount of african cichlids (like 3 hours of them), I finally went up to see where the myrnaes were. By that time my non-fish friend had enough and she must have had a pretty pathetic face on because one of the staff asked if she needed a fish moved to the front. The guy and I went head to head again and he decided that maybe I was going to drive the price up again, so he backed out. Or maybe he decided to let me win since he got the nanos. I won a trio for $21.

They're pretty stressed right now but I believe I have two males and a female. Little bit of tattered fins (probably from being in the bag for so long). Should heal up without problems. :)

A common name is the Topaz cichlid. They come from CA and are related to the convict cichlid, but aren't nearly so nasty. They're not usually sold in petstores, or at least I've never seen them.

hmmm. i went to a local auction a month or so ago and one cool thing they offered was the ability to pay $2 at any time during the auction and get a bag that you want to bid on placed next in line. that way if you know what you want you don't have to wait to bid on it, or if you know you can't stay the whole time you can just get what you want and get out. maybe that's an idea you can share with your club.

Nice pick ups there Eveliens. Wataugachicken is right about moving an item to the front of the line. Many club auctions use a scheme like that to allow people that just have to leave to get a chance on something they really want. I seem to be one of the people that always stay for the whole auction, but have seen that done by people who were only there for an hour or two.

Hey watuga, I was there.

Yes, there was the option of the express bid. I didn't mind staying for the entire auction and by the time my friend had enough, they were already up on the table. If I bring a non-fishy friend in the spring, I will express bid. Thanks for pointing that out guys :)

I definitely have a pair and I still don't know about the third one. It hides except when I'm not in the room (kind of like my loaches).

Well, the little buggers have lived up to their reputation. Momma's herding around about 30 fry. These fish are also the most unphotogenic fish I have ever seen! I tried to take pictures and they still didn't come out nicely :(
