Hello All:

I was hoping someone could recommend an automatic feeder for my community tank. I would prefer one that is NOT battery powered, so I do not have to worry about it running out of juice.

I feed my fish flake foods.

Thanks!

I've often heard that they're more trouble than they're worth. If you're not going to be gone for more than a week, you could consider not feeding them. It sounds bad, but they would be fine. Alternatively you could try one of the pellet things that dissolve over time. Sorry I can't actually recommend what you asked for

Ken, how much can the Eheim put out per feeding? I need an automatic feeder since I will be going to Mazatlan, Mexico in July for a week and because I have both a crab and lobster in my tank, theyll be fighting depending how hungry they are... plus the other 40+fish that I have. I've been looking at the Hydor Ekomixo fish feeder from Bigals since I don't think the Eheim will fit inside my canopy. Does anyone have any experience with the Hydor Ekomixo feeder?

I don't recommend using those. I put one of those in my tank and when I came back 5 days later my ammonia level was shot, and i had massive patches of string algae about 4cm long. And right when i put it in I noticed that it was allowing a LOT of fish food out, right from the get go. So if you're on a vacation.. you'd be better off not feeding the fish.

If you were going on a trip I could see why you would want one, but if it is b/c you dont want to feed them by hand everyday, then I dont recommend them at all. The reason being is that there will always be a fish that misses out at feeding time. When you hand feed you can make sure that your shy fish always get some food. So I can't help you, sorry. :idea2:

I think fish can easily survive a week or even two without feeding. If the automatic feeder is effecient, then you should get that though, but only if you are gone. I wouldn't use one of those just so I don't have to feed them myself everyday.
