I am going to be out of town for two weeks and I am also out of town for the weekend on a regular basis. I think an automatic feeder would be the best way to feed my fish. I bought two cheap automatic feeders but they dont dispense consistent amounts of food, and I think my fish aren't getting enough from them. Does anyone know of any good automatic feeders that actually work well? I have 26 fish in my aquarium, so I need something that can dispense a fairly large quantity and hold enough food for two weeks.

Thanks!

But then again you don't really need one. Your fish should be fine for two weeks with out food.
Really? They wont get hungry?

Also, I think I might be over feeding them when I do feed them. I am used to feeding 2 plattys in 5 gallon tank. Now I am feeding 26. They eat all the food in 3-4 minutes and I feed them once a day. Does this sound about right?

3-7-4min sounds like a bit much, I would but enough flakes to cover your thumb fingernail to start. If they eat that up, add more, and keep going on for about 1-2min. After a while you will get an idea on how much they need to be eating.

In the wild fish don't get food every day. So they still can survive 2 weeks. But that is the upper limit IMO.

What about the little "seashells" that are made out of food that you drop into the aquarium when you are leaving town.

One word: NO! They can contain plaster and other chemicals unsafe for fish. Some people have used them and it was ok, and others lost some fish. I would not use them. Its better just to leave your fish than use one of these.

I figured they would confuse my fish if anything. A foaming seashell for food instead of flakes?

Anyway, I ordered a Eheim feeder. Thanks for the link! That place has amazing prices.

When I leave for 2 week trips, I never feed the fish. If they're healthy and sufficiently fed before you leave, a 2 week period without food won't make a difference to them. Plus, you'll return to sparkling clean water that doesn't require a water change the minute you step in the door. I own several Eheim air feeders, too, but I never use them anymore unless I have fry or a sick fish in a quarantine tank. Just not needed...

For weekends, you absolutely don't need to worry. I have tanks in my office that never get food over the weekend, and the fish in them are thriving.

HTH,
Jim

If fish can go for two weeks without food & you overfeed your fish & you've already purchased two auto feeders & fish don't need to be fed with consistency... why did you buy another $40 auto feeder? Not judging, I just don't want to admit this hobby is as expensive as everyone wants it to be.
