Average start up costs?

I've seen a 29 gallon tank at Petsmart for ..I think...$75. I didn't have to pay that much for mine because I got my heater, 29 gallon, rock for only $20 dollars at a garage sale. I made sure that it was good first. The guy had 2 andd just wanted to get rid of them so I made a good deal! Good luck with your find!

for starters you need 6 things: tank, heater(if keeping tropicals), filter/water mover, light, stand and stuff to make waterchanges easyer.

if you find a used tank, ask how it has been stored. if it has been in the sun much don't get it as the silicone deteriorates badly if it has been outside for any length of time. Kit tanks and cheaper versions will hold water, but the silicone isn't done neatly, or the top rim might not be even. It is up to you what quality level you want.

Do not skimp on the heater. Buy the most reliable brand you can find as failure often means cooked fish. I wouldn't trust the heaters in a typical kit.

Just about any thing that moves water will do the job in your tank. All require some sort of mantenance or cleaning. Some are quieter, more reliable than others but they all work. Undergravels are considered old school and outdated, but if that is what you can afford they are useable.

the most versatile top I know of is plain glass with a plastic hinge down the middle. any light works over that and if you decide to grow plants adding more light isn't hard.

I am currently building a stand for a 29 gallon tank. $20 bought the 2x4s, screws, and a driver bit for the drill. I plan on spending more to finish it up so it looks nice, but will support the tank on just what I have now.
I have a few of the particle board stands. No real problems from them, but my peace of mind says I want a material that doesn't fall apart when it gets wet so I am working on replaceing those.

All the actuall cleaning gets done when water changes are made. Filters make the water clear, water changes make it clean.
Cheap route is a bucket and siphon with a larger gravel vaccuming end on it. Less hassle is a special hose to drain and fill your tank. Python is one brand, and you can make one out of a waterbed filling valve and foodgrade hose.

Garage sales, Ebay, and look in the local paper or sales paper (In Houston we have a small free advertising paper called the Greensheet. Full of things for sale and quite a few good deals).

I found my 29 gallon bowfront at a garage sale for $10.00 including filter, cover, light and several air pumps.

If you are patient you will see lots of deals pop-up. There a fish keepers moving all of the time as well as the people who tried and failed to keep fish and are getting rid of the equipment.

Check for a local aquarium society. Many have web pages where items can be sold. I have seen some good deals on a local aquarium site. Here are a few in you area.

Potomac Valley Aquarium Society
Potomac Valley Aquarium Exchange

If you Google you may be able to find some more.

Awesome, I would be interested in seeing your plans.

If you can find a used deal you will save a lot of money, just check the tank out for structual stability first. As stated check local papers and e-bay (a lot of people advertise local pick up. There are a number of free internet ads also, I know there is www.craigslist.com for west VA but I don't know if that helps you.

I just stacked the peices together so you could see what the finished stand would look like. The supports in the middle of the stand and spanning the width at the bottom are one length of 2x4 cut in half.

I put the front and back pairs of legs perpendicular so that there would be greater stability. I laid the boards at the bottom down to distribute weight.

One thing you can do while you are making a stand is put the tank at the best height for viewing. Mine happens to be 31 inches tall so the 20 long will be easyer to view from standing and sitting. My premade stands range from 27 to 29 inches tall.

Thanks guys for all the help, today I succumbed to the local Petco and bought a 29 gallon tank, hood, and stand. Also with heater and filter to start the fishless cycling. Thanks for all the help!

Any recomendations on where to buy fish?? Which is better, a all around large store like Petsmart/petco or a smaller specialty fish store?

speciality fish store is better for fish most of the time, but you will pay more. Ive bought from petsmart many times, without problmes.

Depends on the employees in each store. Visit each store you can get to a time or two and you will be able to tell which stores are making more of an effort to be sure they are selling healthy stock.

I have seen good chain stores and heard about really bad ones. Same goes for the local stores. I would say that Walmart supplyers cut to many corners to have good fish.
