today i am going to hatch bbs for my betta. I was wondering if i could keep some baby brine shrimp and raise my own colony. i wanna raise them so they get big. tell me if this is possible. also tell me what would they eat. thanks.
It`s very hard to keep them alive past a couple of days. I`ve seen a few suggestions for cornmeal, strained egg yolk, and even yeast. Regardless, most will admit that it is very hard to raise them and not really worth the effort. There are lots of live foods that are easier to raise.
Its possible, finely crushed up flake or pellet foods will do. Raising them is a royal pain though, I only hatch out BBS for free swimming fry during their first 2 weeks. Then the frozen brine does the trick.
Egg yolk will foul the water within a couple hours, do not use that for them. Cornmeal and yeast isn't a good idea either. Remember what your feeding those brine shrimp is what they will have for nutritional value to the fish.
If you don't want to go through hatching the brine shrimp eggs, I think the LFS might have some prepackaged frozen baby brine shrimp prepared specially for fry. I saw a product like that, and it was only a dollar, for a huge chunk of baby brine shrimp. I think that would be much more convienent than hatching your own brine shrimp.
well i know that its a pain to hatch baby brine shrimp. They are for my bettas that are about three weeks old now. I have two pairs of bettas. I have some frozen bbs but it just desnt look right. Mines dont eat them. they only eat things that move. So i think that hatching bbs is a better idea in my opinion.
thanks for telling though.
