baby dps surviving newbie ignorance?

Sorry...didn't mean to come down on you. I'm always thankful for advice. I went to the park today and scooped up some pond water and a pinch of algae. Hoping to pick up some nitrite eating bacteria and some parameceum. Nitrites still at 1.0 but thats a whole lot better than the 3.0-5.0 that it was all last week. I'm hoping I'm nearing the end of this cycling process. Fish are swimming around dispite the fact that they've had three homes in three weeks, 4 homes if you count Petsmart. Think they got tired of a small glass shrimp being in the tank tho. Came home from class to find his carcass under the bridge. He was active and in one piece when I left for figure painting class. So baby DPs have to be culprits. B.a.a.a.d Babies

Not a problem Puff. My reply was more less directed to Oriongirl anyway.
Unfortunately writing what you think and saying what you think can come across with complete different meanings even though you are trying to convey the exact same thing, so I always give consideration to this fact and therefore, if what I have said is misunderstood I usally clarify myself.

Thanks to everyone, RTR, AshDavid, and Oniongirl. Oniongirl you rock! Mission accomplished. It's been eighteen days. and now Ammonia 0, nitrates 20, nitrites 0 (woo hoo!!!), hardness 100, alkalinity 80, and PH 6.8. DPs are active, eating, and have grown. I have a feeling adding the pint of pond water from the local park sped up the process of developing the nitrite consuming bacteria over the last two days. I'll keep monitoring the tank for a nitrate spike but I can stop with the daily water changes now can't I? I think I read somewhere once a week is good.

Yep, once a week is normally just fine. The nitrate spike isn't as lethal--you'll just want to do water changes to keep it from getting higher than about 20 ppm.

Oh, and it's ORiongirl. ;) :D
