I am looking for suggestions about baby items. What did you not have enough of (besides time, sleep and diapers :o )??? What were some of the things you never used, outgrew too quickly to be worth getting, etc? My husband and I went and registered at Babies R' Us over the weekend (such a monopoly :cool: !). We were clueless!! I've probably held 5 babies in my life, never changed one, etc :eek: !!!

Any product suggestions, amounts of items to have, etc. are greatly appreciated!!!!

We never used a 'Diaper Genie' (a plastic trash can with a foot-operated lid worked just as well) or a changing table (a dresser with a foam pad (just get a replacement foam for a changing table worked fine; just remember: never leave an infant on a changing table or any elevated surface without your hand on him/her).

Stuff that is essential (I think): lots of mattress protectors pads (those fabric-covered things that stop leaks from hitting the mattress (get large ones and they can be used when the child moves up to a normal bed);

a baby corral or playpen (we didn't use ours much, but if you're alone with the baby and nature calls, it's nice to have a place to let them play for a couple of minutes); onesies (esp. if baby is born in warm-weather);

a Johnny-Jumper (for when baby's a bit older, but not walking; it's a cloth sling suspended from a plastic frame that hangs on a spring; you attach it to a doorframe and baby can sit and bounce for hours and hours and hours... all 3 of ours loved it);

lots of cloth diapers (can be used in many ways, as burp cloths, etc.);

an infant car seat with a handle and detachable base (serves as a baby seat when detached, serves as an infant car seat when clicked into the base; some even have a stroller base that you can click the seat into and go for rides);

good baby books (get as many as you can find and read them all, especially one dealing with pediatric illnesses; can be comforting the first time baby throws up or gets a fever

HTH!

Everyone's going to have a different slant on things..you just need to read and see what you like. I wasn't around kids much either, but at least I had nurses training to give me some useful info.

I used cloth diapers as burp rags. I recently looked for some for a friends grandchild and had a heck of a time finding them. They are bigger than these things they sell as burp rags, and have the dual function that you can actually use as a diaper in a pinch if you run out..been there done that! And later they make great rags and dust cloths. Also can use under baby's swim suit if you go swimming.

I never had a swing or walker for any of my kids. They had to get around under their own steam. I did keep a playpen up so if I had to do something the baby was corralled. Also makes a great toybox, or if you have a 2 story home, baby can nap there instead of going up to bed. You do want to get them used to sleeping different places from the start.

An absolute must is the best carseat you can find.

You will want some kind of baby seat or carrier. It may well be part of your car seat. I liked the toy bars that you attach on the carsets...gave them something to play whith that they couldn't drop.

Ditto on the regualr garbage can with the foot pedal. Foot pedal a must!! I had a plastic one and put one of those stick on air freshners on the underside of the lid.

We used a regluar dresser for a changing table/dresser for baby's stuff. It was long. We bought it unfinished and did it ourselves. I got some vinyl in a kiddie print and some stuffing and made my own changing pad. YOu don't need a strap. Who ever heard of changind a diaper on a baby with a strap around their waist?? The kids both used these dressers for several years, and currently it's in our bedroom and my husband uses it. Can't do that with a changing table. They are worthless. If you have a multi level home..you can have a changing pad, wipes and a couple of diapers on the other level for emergencies, but for the most part you'll probably want to go to the regular place you change them.

Buy a used baby bed. New is so expensive. Be sure if's safe and the side rails are not too far apart. Cradles for the most part are a waste of $$ because they can't use them very long. Use your playpen as an alternate bed.

Even if you plan to breastfeed, a couple of bottles around are a good idea.

No baby shoes. Not until they can walk, and even then they are better off barefooted. Of course you can put the cutsie ones on for a little while because they are so gosh darned cute, but not for all day. Just footies. Their feet need to strengthen.

All that baby lotion/powder stuff??...you don't need it unless you have a problem. No need to lube baby up on a regular basis unless has dry skin...no need to powder them up unless has reddness in diaper area. You can wash baby with regular soap. For diaper rash use Vitamin A & D ointment or zinc oxide. If really bad diaper rash show the doc, may be a topical yeast infection and need medication.
Diaper wipes are a God send. Non-tear shampoo is also, and when they are older and have long hair..conditioner.

Get books and toys. Read to them from the first. My husband always sang to ours..tapped rythems out on their tummies...they grew to love music. That is still a special bond they have with their dad.

Get a good high chair. If you visit grandma's a lot for meals, grandma may want to invest too so you don't have to haul it.

I never liked the big diaper bags...too much to lug around. I prefered a small one with a compact thing of wipes, a few diapers, a burp rag, and a bottle if needed, or a sippy cup if older. And plastic bags...for containing dirty diapers if need be, and containing dirty clothes. Oh..and also a change of clothes. Maybe even more than one. If we were going somewhere for the day, I'd take more stuff in another bag, but the little bags are better for running errands or trips to the store, etc.

Really look at the quality of diapers...you don't necessarily need the most expensive. Once they are wet you change right away anyway. I usually got store brand.

If you are having baby showers...wait and see what you get before you buy a lot of clothes. When I had my first child, I don't think I had to buy clothes for the first 6 months. You may want to get that special outfit and blanket to bring baby home, and have a couple of onsesies, but don't get much.

I always liked the little thermal blankets..they are a waffle weave and kinda stretchy. Newborns can sometimes be a little disconcerted with all the space after leaving mommy, and wrapping them snugly..not tightly..can help comfort them. Check it out in the nursery...

I usually just kept my stroller in the car. If I needed it at home I got it out of the trunk.

If I think of more I'll add...

Oh, and you can make really good diaper wipes yourself. They're super cheap and we actually preferred them to commercial wipes. Here's how you make them:

Cut a roll of paper towels in half (we used Bounty). In large, cylindrical Tupperware or Rubbermaid container mix 1.5 cups of warm water with 1.5 tablspoons each of baby oil and baby wash. Stir, the put the half-roll of towels in the container. Put on the lid and allow it to soak up the solution (we usually let them sit overnight). When the moisture is evenly distributed throught the towel roll, pull out the cardboard tube in the middle, and pull the 'wipes' out of the center hole where the tube was.

You can adjust the amount of water if you like the wipes wetter or dryer. Also, a decent serrated bread knife will easily cut the rolls in half. (I would get a big pack of Bounty, though, and take it to the basement and cut the rolls in half with my tablesaw. Quick!)

We usually kept a pack of generic commercial wipes around for an emergency, but the homemade wipes worked a lot better and are much less expensive.

Oh, and we use A&D Ointment at every diaper change and never once had a rash, even with our twins.

JIm...I'd not heard of that when my kids were little.
I did see someone get that as a gift for a baby shower once and thought that was a great idea. they gave the supplies for it and the container, and directions. It was well recieved!

I didn't use bibs until they were ready to start eating sitting up in a chair. Just used the cloth diapers like a bib too until then. When they get big enough to sit in the high chair and eat, get the big bibs that cover the whole front of them....in plastic or plactic backed. You'll see why :D

My babies both were larger than 9 pounds. Neither fit into newborn clothes or diaper sizes even at birth. Even smaller babies outgrow the newborn sizes in a few months.

Here's something not to go cheap on- a good breast pump if you want to nurse and go back to work. I think the Mendela brand is the best and the ones made by formula makers are useless (go figure!)

Holly--I feel your pain. My wife and I went to Babies R Us last Saturday and looked around for about 30 minutes, just getting increasingly crankier. Finally we called my sister, who has two girls 9 & 11, and cried "Help!" Fortunately she was able to help us out with some of the major decisions (like choosing from the four and a half million car seats). Some of the things we were recommended as being particularly nice were a cosleeper--a bassinet that essentially attaches to the side of your bed so that you won't have to get up in the middle of the night to check on the baby or breastfeed. Also, there's some sort of Gerber product that's supposed to get rid of gas. Not sure what it's called, but a guy who works across the hall from me swears by it.

ill tell you i also agree about the diaper pail ...and the whole changing table thing! if you live in a two story house a baby gate would be a good investment ..and as for the jonny jump ups ..theres this new thing called a jumperoo...i got mine at walmart ..matched my portable swing :bday: but i loved it and so did my son ..i felt safer with it cause it doesnt afix to a doorway but has the same premis as a jonny jumper ..and it has this nifty toy tray with all those lights and sounds...its about fifty bucks at walmart but it was well worth it to me..and the cloth diapers make great spit rags as well along with the recieving blankets ..and i to was partial to the waffle type ..and onsies youll never have enough ..and the best store brand i can find is walmarts the ones with the ducks ,,they worked great and lasted just as long ..but youll end up with your own favorite ..all i can ay though is that i havent found anyone who likes the new luvs ..they smell funny and leak easily ..they arent worth a penny ..and everyone that i have talked to about them agree ..they are what we call the purple ones ..lol they have changed them so much they used to be good but now the stink...mylocal gas drops are what you want ..they are a good send and the babies dont mind the taste ..i have tasted them myelf, and any car seat that has removable and extra bases is a must for a two car family the bases make it really nice to not have to buckle in the car seat everytime ...

We loved our Diaper Genie. We passed it on to my sister when she had a wee one. I loved the 6 foot diaper snake when you emptied it.
