I like 'em... snails are not generally regarded as good aquarium inhabitants in the UK, but these are (in my opinion) great characters. They totally cowed the clown plecos into submission when they were in the same tank!
I've seen over 20 babies today (possibly double that- they're so tiny that I need to get really close to distinguish them from the tiny ramshorns), most of them in the meniscus (where the water surface curves upwards as it touches the glass8)
I think I'm getting the hang of this now- the eggs seem to go white, then translucent, just before hatching. I got about 40-50 young out of the third clutch of eggs, which I've transferred to a different tank.
I'm not too sure how many of the second clutch have survived, although those I've seen seem to be about three times the size they were at hatching by now.
That's a good question! A few members of my local club have expressed an interest, and applesnail.net suggests that mortality is quite high among hatchlings, so I don't know how overrun I'm going to be yet. I still need to find an LFS that wants some!
These are a few pictures of the last hatch and the adults now:
Sucks that you can't ship living things across the border very easily. There's a snail shop up in Alberta that sells all kinds of colors of brigs, also Canas, spixis, giant ramshorns, and Haustrums. Right now they're not taking orders But I'll be setting up a snail tank over the summer and I plan on having a Haustrum as a "centerpiece" snail
Are apple snails Spring breeders? I'm sure applesnail.net suggested that they bred at raised tank temperatures, but I've actually been trying to gradually drop the temperature in my tanks in response to more natural sunlight raising the daytime temperatures if I don't turn the heaters down. As a result the tank temperatures are much the same overall but with slightly more fluctuation, and they seem to be laying eggs about every three days (I'd be happy for them to stop now LOL!).
