Back of tank: Paint, Printed Background, or leave plain?

I painted the back of my reef tank, on most of my others, I got some navy cloth or black cloth from a fabric store and hang it behind the tank.

I used something called Water Colors Backround. It comes in black or blue, and is available in various sizes.

It is basically a decal, and has a nice shimmery look to it.

The problem I saw with paint is that I might change my mind later. With the decal type applied backround, I could remove it if I ever wanted to change it.

You can find Water Colors at Petmountain on line.

How do you guys have the back of your tanks?

When I set mine up a few days ago, I painted the back glass black with a few coats of Rustoleum semi-gloss enamel. I used a small roller for the first coat, then brushed on the rest. So far, it looks pretty good.

i just got the black (blue on reverse side) plastic background from my lfs
i use the black side

Hello, I am new to this site but one person answered about using the vinyl decal material. This is what I used on my 55 and it comes in any color, you just got to make sure that it is the same color all the way through to the adhesive side and take plenty of time and soapy water installing to get out all the air bubbles. It is easy to remove and resonably priced if you don't want to make the paint leap.

I like to paint the back black or dark blue.

Depends on the type of tank, location, whats in it, etc.

I'd love to have a nice room divider tank, clear on both sides. Maybe starfire glass to boot.

If its just up against a wall or an in-wall tank, then I like backgrounds. For a tank with lots of scaping, plants, etc. I like black. Makes any color in the tank stand out more, and doesnt distract the viewer from the scaping. If there is minimal scaping then one of those textured rock 3D backgrounds would be great, or just the vinyl printed ones.

I did black vinyl on one tank, but could not get all the bubbles out / they came back later and now doesnt look so good. So the last tank I did I painted it black, just with latex pain. Looks much better, nice perfect black with no chance of bubbles, etc. It did take several coats though.

I mostly have black, fabric on 2 & purchased background. Still have a plant printed 1 from more than 20 years ago. I guess they don't wear out or fade, I don't really like it any more but my husband does.

I've read discus prefer (need?) a light colored background, for security I think. Anyone know?
