I guess the last time I logged in was January of last year. I got rid of my tanks three years ago when I moved out, so I didn't have much reason to be here. Well, that changed today!

I picked up a little 6 gallon tank today. It's about all I can do right now in my apartment without freaking out my landlord (he likes the little tank though). I set it up today, but I don't have any fish in it yet. I'm thinking either a small school of tetras or a small school of harquin rasboras. Hopefully I'll figure that out sometime today.

Anyways, just saying hi again.

It's a rectantularish bow front, it's not the eclipse hex tank.

I decided to go with rasporas. Here is the tank as it is right now. I have a piece of drift wood soaking right now that I'll put in later this week. I'm going to go with a little bit of java fern and an anubis for the wood, but it'll be really low-maintenance on the plants. I don't want to get to the point where I need to upgrade the pathetic stock lighting.

He is, he'll have friends soon enough though. He's pretty happy, he's doing a good amount of swimming and isn't showing any signs of discomfort.

I really wish I could have a bigger tank. I just remembered how much I always wanted a pair of german rams. Alas, it'll have to wait until I move again next year into my own place. Then I'm getting a 55-100g planted with rainbows and angels and cories and even some rams. I can't wait. Right now though... I don't think they'd be happy in my sparce little 6.

It has been a really long time since I've cycled a tank so these may be stupid questions.

Because the tank is so small I only got one raspora to start it off so not to over do it. I also got some tank starter bacteria in a bottle stuff. I asked for medium and the guy at the store recommended the tank starter, so I picked it up. I checked the water today and there isn't a trace of anything-- no ammonia, no nitrite and no nitrate.

Is it just too early for ammonia to register, do I need more fish, or are the claims of "cycling a tank in 1-3 days" really true?

Well despite what people have said, I always cycle with such a product and have been able to add half the tank's stock of fish within 3 days. When I havent used it, I have waited weeks, even a month or so, and so it is quite possible that stuff worked.
