It definately adds more depth and color. Have you ever spilled a little water behind you background so some of it clung to the glass? It is really quite an easy trick to make your tank look a lot better.

As a matter of Fact I have done that I remember it does look cool thanks again I am going to try this.
 
i just put black paint on the back of my tank which makes the colors of the fish much brighter
 
I got a few yards each of navy blue and black fabric from walmart and hung it behind my tanks, looks good and is easier than painting.
 
I use a black background, I think it adds more depth and brings out the colors in many fish. Your cichlids may look a little washed out against a white wall.

wow guys so much good info! i like the fabric idea thing..will go to walmart and get a piece of black cloth and hang on the back.
