this morning I fed my fish bloodworms, but I didn't even touch the worms themselves I just pressed the foil on the back of the package. I guess I touched my eye, because in the past bloodworms is the only thing that causes this bad of an allergic reaction. I started sneezing and my nose was running very badly and my throat was itching as well.

The eye thing has happened several times.... this is it currently (3 hours after initial allergic contact).

I know it's not unusual to be allergic to bloodworms, but I am barely allergic to anything else, and I was wondering if the severity of my bloodworm allergy is common?

Excuse the ugliness, I am not wearing makeup.

My eye as far as it will open... Needless to say, I am skipping school today.

Oddly enough you should mention that...I had a REALLY nasty bout with allergies that I think was related to fish food...Not sure, but it seemed to happen first thing in the morning when i was feeding the fish..My eye looked exactly like yours. When opening food or removing lids, I keep my face as far away as I can and wash my hands immediately...So far it seems to be working...

I didn't think if I touched the food it would be a problem.

But I guess it is.

My eye was worse... I took antihistamines and it has been three hours. It's rather hideous.

LoL I'm in the same boat as you guys. :) I'm allergic to any frozen fish food, but I only break out so to speak if I rub my face before I've washed my hands after handling the food. I can also only touch the foil and then still get the puffy eyes, runny nose etc. I make sure to wash my hands pretty well after feeding the fish to prevent me from having a reaction again. I also end up taking antihistamines to calm the reaction down. Usually takes an hour at least for all the swelling etc to go down too.

Wow. That's quite the reaction. I never even thought of someone being allergic to fish food.

Have you thought of wearing gloves? Latex or plastic (if you are allergic to latex). Wearing gloves will keep it off your hands and help remind you not to touch your face.

Dunno if that will help. Just something that occured to me.

If fish only knew what you went through for them :)

You said you were taking antihistamines, are you taking benadryl? Its pretty good for allergies, but always check with the pharmacist.

I didn't thik you could be alergis to fish food. I hope it clears up quickly.

It actually warns you on most bloodworm food packages. I think it has to do with something in the bloodworms being similar to a chemical in the human blood.

I am not severely allergic to bloodworms but my arm itches if i put it in the tank when i fed bloodworms a few days before.

Allergies

That happens to me around cats, dogs (why I keep fish), grass, cashews, willow trees, dust mites, etc. ad nauseum....

I thought I was OK with fish, but recently I developed a rash on the inside of my elbow where it touches the rim of the tank when I siphon vacuum. I was worried it was a bacterialogical infection, but it hasn't eaten my arm off yet. Still I have been putting off doing any more vacuuming until it clears up and dosing it with bacitracin (sp?). Ugh... It itches and dries out, I hope it clears up soon it's been over a week...
