my fish have had a ligh case of ich in my 10g tank so last night i put in about 1/2 a teaspoon of salt. this afternoon, however, i noticed that all my fish had a REALLY bad case of ich all of a sudden. should i put in more salt or something? how do i get rid of this without it killing my fish first? your healp is appreciated.
Yes, follow daveedkas directions. You have to use enough to kill the ich. That goes with any medicine. If you don't use it as prescribed, it will not work. However it cna make the parasite/bacteria more prone to be resistant to the treatment. Follow the directions and your ick will go away. have a great day!!
I also tried the salt and heat method described in the article and it worked great. No problems after that. Also pay close attention to the start and end dates for the treatment. This is very important. Stop too soon and the ich will come back.
Ich cannot be killed while on the fish, if it is there then it has to run it's course and fall off. At elevated temps this is only 3-4 days, at lower temps it can be a little longer. Furthermore ich is not large enough to see when it attaches, it grows to visible size while on the fish. Therefore it is not uncommon to see additional ich during the first few days of treatment. any freeswimmer that attached before the salt level was high enough to kill it will have to grow, fall off multiply and hatch before it can be killed. Give the proper dose of salt or meds time for the cycle to run through. Nothing but increased temperatures will get the ich off your fish quicker. Salt and meds will kill off the ich as it hatches and rid the tank of it permanently.

Be sure to follow the instructions from the article linked above 100%. I know a day has passed, but continue to add salt slowly and increase the heat slowly....then you'll need to have some patience as the ich goes through its, hopefully accelerated, life cycle. I've used the method twice on two tanks and it definitely works! My corys are none the worse for wear after 2 tsp/gal and 84-ish degrees.
