I got a pair of rainbowfish the other day and the second they were introduced to the tank, my long-finned zebra danios huddled up into a corner. I didn't notice any sign of aggression initially, but this morning I woke up and found that one of my danios has torn dorsal fins :mad2: I had to seperate the danios and keep them in a temporary tank until I figure out what to do with these ill-tempered rainbowfish.

Grrr - anyone else have any experiences that they can share on rainbowfish? What are suitable tankmates?

Rainbowfish

1) Need to be in groups of six or more
2) Need to be the only schoolers in the tank, unless you have a really really big tank
3) Are very active fish and spawn/spar a lot
4) Can be aggressive. Depends on what you end up with. Every bunch is different, regardless of genus/species
3) Will cause most other schooling fish to hide. If they don't hide and get out of the way, the rainbows will MAKE them get out of the way.

Danios are hyperactive and they probably got in the rainbow's faces.

Rainbows get along with most fish, they just need their space. Crowd them and they will crowd back.

I'd take the bows back or lose the danios.

What kind of rainbowfish are they and how big is the tank?

I'd tell you except I have no idea - they were sold to my sister (who bought it because they looked "pretty").

When we called up the store, the guy simply called them rainbow fish. I haven't found any pictures that I could identify as my own. In any case, I think I'll be returning the rainbowfish... my community tank was doing great until they were introduced - They may be great fish, but they're not for me. Thanks for all the info. What a pain.
