Badis badis burmanicus

1. That's going to depend... maybe $8 or so for juveniles showing some color...

2. Tropical: Badis and Dario species get into the upper reaches of rivers in Assam, the hill country north of Bangladesh, and upper Burma, but they're not sub-tropical. Most Cichlids are too aggressive.

3. They don't seem to be fussy about hardness and pH. Not any more difficult than, say, Gouramis taken as a group.

The only fastidiousness is in their reluctance to eat flake feed. (Mine haven't even looked at a flake yet.) And they aren't competitive with bolder fish.

These guys can jump!

I found my juvenile alpha male, now a little less than 2" total length, cleared the glass, 2.5 inches above the water line, and landed in the blackworm tray, in three-quarters of an inch of water (enough to cover his gills) on a bed of Java Moss.

He lay quietly, because the room is cool today, til I found him, collected him, floated him in his tank, where he got active again, freed him. And he ate another blackworm for supper!

These Badis are tough.
