Reading my fresh water Encyclopedia I found a picture of a fish I can see perfectly in my tank, with a funny name of Badis. Does anyone know anything about this breed? Are they hard to find? Expensive? The fish is only 3 inches long and requires a 12 inch long tank, says the book, hardy withstands temperatures up to 83 degrees. Peaceful and good for a community tank, not to mention beautiful colouring: pink with red and green oval spots.

Anything else someone can tell me about this breed? Thanks!

Here's the AC species profile... AC says "beware" for temperament

But live aquaria claims they're peaceful

Commonly referred to as dwarf chameleon fish... live aquaria sells them for $7.49 each. I've never seen them at PetSmart or any other lfs before though.

I 'googled' and found these sites:

There are many types of badis. I have kept Scarlet Badis and they are very nice, quiet community fish. This type of badis only gets an inch long too. Unfortunately, I switched him out of my smaller tank and put him in my newly cycled tank and it was too soon & I lost all three of them :(

Thanks, Tara! Aren't they cute? Amazing how different sources give you different information!? My encyclopedia says that all the fish needs is a 12 inch tank length. The site where they are sold says they need a 20g tank. Also, these two sources have different temperature requirements, etc. I wonder why pet stores don't have them  ?

Hi, Must4ng s4lly! You are from Texas, too;) ! Of course I'll have to check our other pet stores. Our Pets Mart doesn't have anything, and I really mean it---barely anything at all. We also have Pet Land, and it is a better store in our area, with bigger fish selection. Maybe they'll have Badis. I like scarlet Badis too. Their colour is so vibrant.
