I've heard people putting bags over their filter inlets to collect food bits, stop fry and shrimp from entering, etc... what should I be looking for? Can I assume that PetSmart or PetCo carries these? (I don't really want to drive across town to my nearest LFS).

Thanks.

You can find bags made for filter media or even pantyhose work. I (and many here) use the little sponges for aquaclear filters. They work great. Just snip out a small hole in the middle with scissors and work the filter intake into it.

IF you have an OLD fish net CUT that out and USE it.

just dont use old stockings

I use the replacement sponges for penguin reverse-flow powerheads for filter intake covers. They don't clog up nearly as quickly as bags or other sponges I've used, and are easy enough to rinse with weekly partial water changes.

I find the Aqua Clear sponges work best since you can rinse them out with very little trouble.

thank you everyone for the suggestions.
