Baking soda for pH?

Plants naturally turn water acidic - acidic water suits their processes better.
A slower but safer (for fish) way to raise the pH is to add oyster shells or clam shells (any hard shell). The pH will gradually rise to neutral levels.
If you want to lower pH levels, use peat that has been rinsed a little (rinsing reduces the amount of colouration it will do to your tank). Place a small amount into a fine-mesh cloth bag and suspend it in the tank. Or if your filter allows room for adding various materials, place the bag in there.

Right, coral/calcium carbonate substrate is my preferred method mainly for the sake of constant stability. I was just curious as I had never heard of using this before. I usually don't mess with pH unless I have some seriously picky/delicate fish. Thanks for the answers!
