Bamboo in betta bowl

I never said it was "optimum", it's just not neglectful. I also never claimed oxygenation was the only factor involved in considering water quality (I'm well aware of the nitrogen cycle) just the only one I mentioned. Yes, maybe I should do 2 or 3 water changes per week instead of one to compensate for lack of filtration, but I should also eat better and contribute to charity more. These are all arguments of standards. Nothing's perfect, even in a "natural" environment. Nothing about keeping fish in an aquarium comes close to natural really so don't let the crown weigh too heavily.

Yes maybe you should eat better and contribute to charity, but that is your choice not to. I think you would have a different outlook if you wanted to do those things and someone prevented you from it.

Jeff, if you wouldn't mind doing some tests, I am under the impression that if you keep a single Betta in a 1 gallon container with a piece of bamboo in it, your bioload will be acceptable and manageable weekly. Do you have a test kit to test the water quality? I know it's a bit of work, but I'd be curious to see the actual results. My experience with a 2 gallon is what leads me to believe that 1 gallon might be similar.

There's plenty of things I would like to do but am prevented from. Just like my betta would like to be in a 120 gallon tank, I would like to live in a mansion and not have to go to work every day. Where is this perfect world people seem to think they're living in where everything and everyone gets optimal conditions of their choice. Fish adapt to sub-optimal conditions just like people (see every fish ever kept in an aquarium for examples).

I have never put bamboo into soil. Usually in a vase with gravel or pebbles and it grew fun. I have this bottle that was used as a nutrient drink called Xango, and the bamboo plant is thriving and getting bigger. Must be the nutrients left in the bottle, after I washed it out alot.

As for an aquarium, it has been said to not be fully submerged and the leaves out. I used to have a square nano tank and it had 3 walls lined up like a bamboo wall and the front empty. The bamboo thrived.

:iagree: I'd try that as well!

Today I picked up some bamboo, its in his bowl now... I cut a hole in the netting so it'd fit through. I'll see how it does.
