Bamboo Shrimp Molting

The other problem is feeding. As filter feeders, it can be tough for bamboo shrimp to find enough food in an aquarium, especially in smaller tanks. Some of them will learn to use their fans as scrapers, allowing them to scrape edible materials off plants, driftwood or even the gravel in the tank. I would say if yours survives for a month, it's probably past import shock and finding enough to eat so it can be expected to live for a good long while.

I just love to watch mine filter feed! I have some very tall vallisneria growing right where the filter pours back into the tank, so the plant tops are constantly in the current. He sits on one blade facing into the current with all of his fans held out, and every 5-10 seconds he puts one fan into his mouth and licks it clean. Endlessly fascinating creature …

I got 2 of them yesterday. Really neat. Both of them have turned from a tank color to a bright orange/red color. One hides in a cave and filter feeds, the other wanders around the tank picking stuff off of the gravel.

I am just going to assume that they will find food where they can.

I did read somewhere that turning orange is a sign that they are happy with their conditions.

The advice on the Petshrimp forums largely seems to indicate that trying to target feed them usually only leads to poor water quality. There is more info there if you're interested. I've not quite yet decided, so I'm doing a bit of both.

I didn't "target" feed them. You add it to the water and they will spend many hours a day parked under the filter catching the particles with their fans. Cleanest/clearest tank I've ever had.
