I have a bamboo shrimp in my 33 Gal tank. I've had him for two weeks now, and he's doing great. I was just wondering if there is anything special I need to do for him to keep him happy and healthy (outside of giving him pleanty of hiding places, the usual water checks/ changes)?
they like a high flow area to filter feed (not too high of course). I setup a spot for mine usng my filters outlet, and another where my vortex CO2 reactor's output is. When I wake up there they are filter feeding from the reactor I think a powerhead would work fine as well.
I'd supplement feed him/her. I just think it's unfair to expect them to live on suspended crud in the water. You can buy plankton for filter feeders (mostly marine), but you can also just crush some flakes into a powder and pour them into the filter stream. I'd suggest letting the flake powder soak in some tank water first to waterlog them
Thanks, He's pretty red now, and he camps out near the filter intake. I'll get some algae pellets for future use, and already crushing the flakes for him. He likes to hang out witht the Red Claw crab. Looks like the crab stirs stuff up and the shrimp cleans up after him.
Just so you know, red-clawed crabs are brackish, bamboo shrimp are freshwater, so they are not good tankmates. The crab also needs access to air to breathe.
Already got the air problem under wraps. I have a little salt in the water for the crab, and so far the shrim seems to be doing great. I will watch them both though. The first sign of stress and I'll move tanks.
Sorry, but the LFS is wrong. Aquarium salt is only good for treating disease. To make brackishwater you need marine salt, and a hydrometer to measure salinity. The crab will live in FW for a little while but in order to live a full life it needs brackishwater.
