Hi!

This is possibly a crazy question, but I'm gonna ask it anyway lol.

I know that some vegetables can be fed to certain fish, but what about a small slice of banana?

The fish in the tank I would try this in (that might be interested) are a blue gourami (three spot), otos, platy, and I have no idea if the cory or black khulies or neons would even consider this food lol.

I thought I should ask before trying, I know there is at least one fish that eats bananas, but don't know if it's safe for these fish.

Anyone know?

Thanks. :)

personally in it's natural form I would be hesitant to put banana in my tank as it might whack your water quality as it broke down.

I dont see why trying small bits would be an issue. Just keep track of where they fall so you can remove them if they are ignored. There a lots of fish that are opportunistic feeders in the wild and have evolved to be able to a wide variety of foods. I have fed apples and many different types of vegtables of the years I have been keeping fish and never had any issues. I'd be interested to see your conclusions if oyu go through with it.

I was hoping it would be eaten and not just break down.

If you toss in an entire banana I'd expect bad things to happen. If you mush it up some and add it to some water to make slurry and the feed it I'm sure the results will be much better.

Do you blanche the apples?

Ok, I tried an 1/8" slice broken into 3 pieces. The first piece that I put in, well, it floats! lol
Luckily I was able to catch it. I weighted it down with part of a plant anchor and put it in the dish. Everyone's scampering around trying to find the food, they must smell it. (Or they smell the dried worms I gave the betta, but she's recovering from getting rid of some fuz and needs to put some weight back on.)
The cory went over it a few times but doesn't seem to think it's food - yet anyway.
The snails were going after it in about a minute, they obviosly know it's food lol.

After observing for about 2min I dropped a tiny piece of algae wafer near the banana hoping it will help them find it, cause they know what the wafer smells like.

Will check back in a few minutes to see how it's going. Definitely won't want it in the water for prolonged period if they are not going to eat it.

I tried putting one of the 1/3rds in another tank with just snails and live worms, will check on them shortly. (Weighted it down w/plant anchor as well.)

LOL! Oh yes tossing in a whole banana would make a mess! No, I was just going to try a little piece. :)

gl sheppard!

Mash one of the small pieces into about 1/4 cup of tank water and add a few drops.
Won't that just put miniscule pieces in the water column?
My gourami an platy like to tear into their food ya know? For fry I would understand what your saying, but is it really necessary for much larger fish?
