Banded Coral Shrimp turns predatory

Sad day, found my smaller clown of the pair dead this morning with my sally lightfoot chewing on him stuck to my Koralia. I'm fairly sure the lightfoot was just scavenging, but he and the banded coral shrimp are really the only two semi-predatory creatures in my tank.

I had a blenny and a goby vanish recently with no explanation, and now with the clown clearly being killed I have an issue.

That said, I new this would happen one day, my wife begged me to let her get that shrimp and I caved (over a year ago).

That said, it needs to come out. I can put him in the refugium, but getting it out of the tank is the trick. Tried this morning, all I managed to do was have him detach a claw (which I guess will keep him from being quite so threatening for the short time anyway).

Any suggestions for getting him out that doesn't involve completely dismanteling my 75g reef?

I had the same problem, only my large coral shrimp completely destroyed and consumed my pair of new Cleaner Shrimps. strange...but true.

I also have the same problem with trying to get it out of there before it does more damage. DIY trap would be the best way to go (besides taking the tank apart and killing something else).

anyone here got a few plans for a good DIY trap?

ideas people!

I got him.

So, for future reference, the way to do this is:

1) Wait till he's somewhat out in the open

2) Chase him around with a small net, try and move him towards the top of the tank.

3) They sink really slow, they don't swim down. So if you can get him up in the water column, he's easy picking.

Anyway, he's in my refugium now, by himself. I'm sure he isn't real happy, but I am putting an aggressive tank together sometime in the near future here so he can go in there.

Thanks for the tips everyone.

being fairly new to the hobby in general, what do you mean be an aggressive tank? A tank full of aggressive fish they may turn on each other at any given time? heh heh

Basically what I mean is anything that is not reef compatible that i'd like, that won't immediately kill one another.

Some people do things like eels, lionfish, boxfish, puffers, etc.

Or tamer like angels, triggers, etc.

I haven't really decided personally, though I'm leaning towards the more aggressive stuff.

my CBS killed one of my maroon clowns..took her butt back to the store and traded her for a nice emerald crab..she lost a claw too in the catch...but i don't know about putting puffers and triggers in with the shrimp cause they will eat her...

If anyone does have ideas for a trap (for fish and/or shrimp) I would love to hear them, as I have been spending a lot time chasing (freshwater) shrimp.
