I have kept pygmi sunfish in the past but always end up releasing them after noticing that they seem not to eat anything I have to offer. I know they eat copepods and will clear out a tank quickly. Is there a readily available food source for these guys

Once an aquatic animal has been kept in an aquarium you should not "release it" into the wild. You may also end up releasing pathogens that will effect the wild stock. The responsible thing to do is to rehome (to a responsible home) or properly euthanize the fish.

Sorry about getting on the soapbox. I just hope you do not release any more fish into the wild - even if that is where they originally came from. :D

That being said: "Aquarium-kept individuals readily feed on commercially prepared foods." Found at: http://www.outdooralabama.com/fishing/freshwater/fish/other/pygmy/banded/

Cheers!

My guys readily eat frozen bloodworms. Any small live prey (brine shrimp, small scuds or blackworms, baby ghost shrimp, etc.) will be eaten. Daphnia and copepods are easily cultured in buckets with a little vegetable matter such as grass clippings added. If the buckets are left outdoors uncovered they will also produce mosquito larvae, which are just as much appreciated.
