Barbs - hiding under bridge - scared?

I would not say to remove the plants. The plants will give them places to hide and keep down the stress. If you can even, go out and get a 10 gallon tank. They are not very expensive and will add some more space for your fish. You should be able to use most of the decor from the 5 gallon in the 10 gallon tank. I live in Wisconsin USA and a 10 gallon tank is about $10US at my local Wal-Mart. You should see a big difference in the fish with a bigger tank.

Yes I like to know I'm doing things correctly - what will I be like when me and the other half have a baby?!!
You'll probably be a conscientious and attentive dad, then. that's always a good thing :thm:

good luck and please let us know if you have any other questions!

I only have a small space available for a tank, but if the table is big enough to hold a 10g tank, I will get one. I have moved the plants around a bit so they have one area they can hide and it has helped a little - they venture out every now and again but still cram under the bridge for most of the time!

Ha! Yeah I will be very dedicated - I think!! Got to get married first though(in September) before I think about babies!

Thanks for your help!

congratulations on your upcoming wedding!!! i just got back from seeing two of my good friends get married this weekend.

who needs to think about babies when you've got new fishies? just kidding

sorry you didn't really get a clear response to your other thread regarding tank size. this forum has a tendency to wander, even though we're not supposed to stray from topic. kind of like what i'm doing here :)

I hadn't appreciated how much fish needed taking care of before getting the fish/aquarium! Saying that, I would still have got them had someone told me it's not easy to keep them well. I like a challenge - that's why I'm getting married!!!!!!

The other topic has wandered to chat about plants and that has got me thinking about whether to get plants now!!

I thank you for originally pointing out the tank size is probably too small - I just wanted other opinions just to be sure!

THANKS!!!! :)

you're very welcome.

i like live plants, but they're a whole other challenge. i would suggest getting your fish stabilized before trying to tackle issues of light, fertilizers, CO2. otherwise you could end up with dead plants rotting that will compound the ammonia and nitrite problems. i am very glad that i had the fish thing figured out before i started getting into plants, otherwise the whole mess would have just been worse.

i would suggest reading the Aquatic Plants forum or even searching specific plant species in the "Search" button, to see what kinds of problems other people have had with them.

again, welcome to Aquaria Central, and I'm so glad you are enjoying the challenge and making an effort to do the best for your new pets :)

Still 'hiding' Still Worried!

My 4 Odessa barbs have been congregating under the bridge all week and rarely come out... one is very jumpy and whenever we go near the tank or make a slight noise, it swims frantically around - looking very mad for a few seconds then goes under the bridge again to be with the others.

I will be changing the water (25-50%) tomorrow but am not sure this is going to help in anyway - esp as this action was the start of them hiding last week!

I'm wondering, assuming they are stressed, if they are going to last much longer...

Sorry to bring back a old thread but I am experiencing almost the exact same issue with my 6 Black Ruby Barbs. I have had the tank up and running for a few mths now and everything has been fine until yesterday (Monday) when I noticed that the fish all jolted off and hid when I came near the tank. The issue is still ongoing today. When I leave and watch from a distance the fish seem fine, and they are still feverishly eating when fed however this sudden "skiddishness" has me a little perplexed.

My Ammonia, Nitrate levels are normal, however I do have a slightly raised ph (8.0 - tap is 7-7.5, see my other thread Here ) but this has been the case for the past mth or so. The only thing I've done differently lately is that on Friday I added a java fern (my first live plant) attached to a piece of small driftwood (2nd pc) and while doing my water change I did a 20something % water change instead of a level %20.

I use AquaClear Plus to remove chlorine and chloromines so I dont think that is the issue as was suggested to neilmack.

Does anyone have any more input or perhaps Neilmack himself could let me know how his situation turned out!??

Thanks!
