Could i keep a comet and shubunkin in a large barrel outside?

Well a barrell is generally not a very good idea, as it tends to be tall rather than long. The fish need lots of swimming room and a barrell just doesn't cut it.

I've kept goldfish in barrel ponds over the summer. I then moved them indoors to a bigger aquarium.

Mosquitofish would be much better for your barrel pond.
