How will this rock affect my pH? The seller assures me it's harder than granite and won't affect my pH either way.... is this correct? I'm wanting it for a Cichlid tank, so I don't want any issues to crop up with my pH levels for my fish.

basalt can be smooth or VERY coarse with sharp definition that can injure fish. have you had a chance to see the stuff yet? either way, basalt is virtually inert and won't affect your water chemistry.

The seller is providing pea-gravel-style basalt which they say is good for either zen gardening or use in aquariums/terrariums/viviariums. I think I'll ask to make sure their product isn't chips and that it doesn't have sharp edges. That'd probably be bad for a cichlid tank with as much as they like to fuss with the substrate!!

Yeah, it's essentially a form of washed beach gravel with a high basalt content. So it's no more hazardous than the usual small-grade gravel would be, I think....

Basalt is one of the hardest stones known to humans. The Egyptians carved many large sculptures using it with tools that had to be continually sharpened. However, they have lasted in almost perfect condition for around 5 thousand years. Most definitely inert!!!
