chiclids getting enough air?

I was wondering if a canister filter is giveing the correct ammount of air into my tank. I have a 75g and a couple of the fish are at the top of the tank. Wondering if that is just cause they want to be up there or maybe because of the ammount of air in the tank. Any help would be great. Thanks:)

I would check ammonia and nitrite readings. I have never had fish gasping at the top for air because of low oxygen levels... I have however when ammonia and nitrite show up.

What is the temperature also?

Species of cichlids? Or at least their origin (SA, SA, West African, Rift Lake)?

I had a similar problem with cannisters. Not enough break in the surface tension. What I did was add a bubble wand. No more problem. I'm told power heads will help as well.
