I have a 30 gallon tank with lots of driftwood, moss and other various plants. Right now the stocking list is:

1 bamboo shrimp, fat and happy and molting beautifully!

1 African dwarf frog

5 cherry barbs all around an inch to and inch and 1/2

Ever increasing number of ghost shrimp

Horribly increasing amount of snails! (Having real trouble keeping numbers low!)
and two newly acquired peacock eels on at around 4" the other a round and active 6" (I accidentally got two when one "went missing" and I apparently did not look hard enough through the gravel. when i got a new one to "replace" my missing eel which I thought slithered down the vent in my floor he poked his head out to welcome his new buddy to his domain!)

My question is can I keep this amount of fish in this size tank, I would also love to get a pair of German blue rams my LFS is receiving soon. I didn’t plan on having two eels and the smaller one hides much more and eats less so I may return him, but they seem to like each others company and rest together when their both out and about. I feed them chopped up earth worms or whole small earth worms each night just before lights out, the only animal in the tank which competes with them for the worms are the shrimp and my ADF.

In a few months I plan on having a larger 55 gallon tank in to which I will put my two eels should I keep both of them.

Sorry this is such a long post! Thanks for reading and replying!

The rams shouldn't be a problem, but they do like a bit higher temps. I'd be concerned with the eels and your ghost shrimp. Both the eels and the rams may try eating them.

thanks Nolapete for the reply, I'm always so worried about over stocking so I'm glad this set up would be OK. The shrimp are breeding like crazy so I'm fine with the fish using them as food. That's quite Darwinian I know but hey, circle of life right?

I would agree that a dedicated tank would be best for the two eels. I would also warn against keeping rams and barbs in the same tank. Barbs tend to be aggressive... rams like a nice quiet tank. Finally you mentioned that you tank decoration is fairly dense? You should try to be sure there is plenty of open swimming room for the barbs, they like to run ; )

ok. so no other fish? is that the verdict? I did some rearranging and cut out a whole bunch of plants to go into my other tanks, little less crowded now!

here's a pic of my redone tank. any suggestions as to other fish? or maybe a switch of fish?
(hope that pic came through not really computer savvy! :)!)

Looks like your pic is only viewable to myspace members...

Not all barbs are aggressive, most that could even be considered that are more nippy anyways.

Cherry barbs are very peaceful and should have no problems in a community tank.

But I agree, the eels pretty much stock the tank by themselves.
