The tubing syphon with both ends in the water will, indeed work, provided that when you remove the end of the tube, you have your thumb over it to maintain suction in the line. This part can be a little frustrating until you get used to making sure that all of the air is out of the line. I have used this method many times with goldfish, which produce a lot of sludgy waste, and it works like a charm. My battery vac was placed in the garbage the week I bought it.
