we just had a 4 and a half hour power outage in the area (down tree on power line)
my sw tank seems to be ok, the temp did drop so i dont know if this caused any stress and eventual demise of livestock.
is there anything i can buy like a battery back up? what do most sw hobbyist do in this situation?

Wow wish I could have been that lucky. Like a week ago in MI we had a really bad ice storm I lost power for just about 30 hours. It was the longest 30 hours Ive ever had. I have 5 saltwater aquariums and what I did for most of the time (till I could get a generater) is ran a power convertor from my cigerette plug in my car then hook an extension cord through my window and had to leave my car running for quite some time. The only problem with it was that it was only 300 watts 600 max so I could only power my pumps and not any heaters. It worked and i covered all the tanks with insulated blankets but the tank temps still dropped to about 67 was the lowest. I only lost a neon dottyback and my big glaxia and brain coral. I was not happy but then I was sort of cause it could have been a lot worse. Best thing you can do is invest in a generator. I know there kind of expensive but well worth it if this comes up. I know now that I have one I wish I would have the whole time!

oh wow im so sorry you had losses. 30 hours is sick, you must have been frozen lol
after just 4 1/2 hours my house was an igloo, the temp dropped to 60 and to me it might as well been 20 because i was frozen.
thats a good idea with the car. i may try a battery backup, but i dont think they last long. the generators scare me because ive read of carbon monoxide deaths and me being so paranoid thats all i need to hear lol

get a battery backup, or better yet 2 or 3 lol.
a battery is better then a generator in the fact that the battery will automatacly switch over in a power outage, a generator won't. so the next time the power gos out when your not there you don't have to worry.

i found a 1500watt batter power supply source, it says the battery last depending on what its running. like it said a radio will last 30 hours but a microwave will only last 25 minutes...do filters take up alot of "juice"? and the pc lighting?
this unit is 300 bucks, if it can power a filter and the lights for at least 12 hours it may be worth it, but if i only get 25 mins out of it then no its a waste lol

dont run lighting. I would only run the fitler.

By the time you by a backup that is powerful enough you should just buy a generater.

Good luck :)

if you want to run everything for your tank for 12+ hours than your going to need a generator

if you just want to runonly what you need to keep your fish alive for a short time (2hours max) then you should get a battery backup

I don't think the filters take much energy but lights do.
