IHey everybody. I am soon going to set up a 45 gallon rubbermaid "pond" to breed gambusia as feeders. The only thing stopping me is a pond pump/aerator to stop the water from become stagnant (summer) or freezing over (winter). The area where the pond will be is out of reach of wires, so I need something that is battery powered and fairly cheap. Any ideas? Also, I am setting this up in the next week or so, so I need answers ASAP!

It would probably be cheaper in the long run to get yourself a really long extension cord and run an AC pump.

Are you keeping it outside? If it's in an open area, it'll probably get enough movement from the fish and the wind. Add some plants like water lettuce or duckweed and you'll be set. I've kept guppies like this without any issue.

I don't know about in the winter time. If the pond is in danger of freezing over, the mosquitofish will likely die.

I agree with the solar powered pump option, just google it there are plenty for sale.

Will I need a pump during summer? I am planning to fill this with anacharis, so hopefully it will provide enough O2. I guess I could feed out all the gambusia before it starts freezing that then start over in spring.
