Yeah, it was inevitable, stick 12 high power 3w LEDs over a 29g tank and you'll not only have wonderful plant growth...... but algae too. Namely BBA.

I've always had some issues with BBA, but only with my driftwood, not on plants. Well thats long since past. I now have BBA on every plant and just about everywhere else in the tank.

I've already got a bottle of H202 and prepared to use it, but first I need to know two things.

First, what causes BBA? I've just restarted my CO2 system (2 2L bottles) in an attempt to curb it, so far no new leaves appear to have BBA. But aside from lack of CO2? anything else? How can I keep this stuff from doing this again 3 months down the road.

Second, what plants and fish won't take to H202 very well?

My current stocking list.
4 female Bettas
4 otos
1 Rasbora tetra (I need to re-home him, or get him some buddies)
1 C. Trilineatus
4 C. paleatus
1 BN pleco
1 Clown pleco

A lil overstocked but I keep up

Now my plant list
Java Moss (who doesn't have this?)
Java Ferns (probably survive)
Java Lace Ferns (again, survival likely)
C. Lucens (I would like it to survive, but not complete loss if it doesn't)
C. Parva (this I would prefer it would survive)
C. Spiralis (another crypt I would like to survive)
1 E. Barthii. Often called a Ruben sword, but its not.
A. Nana
A. Barteri

Almost all my plants would more than likely survive, though the sword might take some extensive damage.

What is your photo period? In my case it always has to do with two things or a combo of both, too much light and too long of a photo period.
I recently upped my mid day burst an extra hour and BBA appeared almost within day's!

Try the H2o2 method and afterwords reduce your photo period.

Almost any fish is sensitive too an OD of H2o2 I killed my poor Bn plec :( he was hiding under some anubias and I did a heavy concentrated dose.

H202 supposedly dissipates quickly so just watch the fishies when doing a concentrated spot dose.

About 8-9hrs, I've been leaving the lights running for a few extra hours but at low power (like 10% or so) so I can watch my fish for the spare time that I can.

I think I know why I had a large upswing in the growth of that stuff. I had dosed Flourish Iron a couple of times, after that that stuff has really taken off.

so for the longest time i didnt know what BBA was but i did alittle research. so its pretty much the black furry stuff you see on stems and plants?

Im very concerned with my plants because i think i have a little bit of that and after reading this thread i guess i might be giving them to much sunlight.

during the day when im at school ill leave the blinds open(not rolled up but the slats will be open) and in the evening until i go to bed i have the 8000k 17w bulb on.

is this too much?

sorry for kinda hijacking the thread but i figured i might as well ask while theres already a thread on it :P
