i noticed a pile of sand and arognite at the side of one of my live rocks....at closer inspection i noticed something popping out the rock and tipping the sand out....does anyone have an idea what this creature might be please.

sounds like either a mantis or a pistol shrimp..pistol sounds good so far as they are excellent construction engineers at diggin tunnels...

my god you dont want it if its a mantis... the wild ones grow anywhere from the smaller 6"+ to the huge 12", and i watched 1 jump out and thwack a crab twice to kill it with its huge, power claws...

to add to your comment mantis can also break a glass fishtank. well the larger ones anyway. but they are a cool shrimp though...
i have also heard quite loud clicking noises from the tank....hope it isnt a mantis....dont want my tank breaking 
Well both types of shrimp mentioned here will make a clicking noise, mantis is the more prominant clicker. best if you can either get a photo and post it here, or best still fish it out and get it in a tub and then photograph it and we will try and ID it for...

Don't worry about the breaking glass part. They need to be fairly large to do that, and not all smashers can break glass.
