I am new to plant keeping and am trying my first lightly planted tank. The is 50 gallons with an amozon sword some java fern an onion a vasenrilla and some other plants about 10 in total. The tank has been established for about 6 weeks and my plants are doing good, but i think they could do better. I was wondering if anyone had some tips for begginners or what is needed for the plants to grow to their full potential.

Well, first off what kind of lighting do you have? If it's the stock hood that's not going to cut it and you will need another hood, like the ones from www.AHSupply.com I'd suggest the kit with two 55 watt ballasts. http://www.ahsupply.com/36-55w.htm

The amazon sword and vallisneria may need to have supplemental root tabs for fertilizer, because they are heavy root feeders. They will also will need higher lighting than the stock hood. The java fern and onion plant should be okay in lower light. The java fern will need to have it's rhizome above the gravel, though, because if it is buried it will die. Take a look on this site for plants, perhaps you can spot the ones that you don't know the names of as well. http://www.aquahobby.com/e_garden.php
