Behaviour Problems please help!!!

did you use biopira or old filter media in your tank when you added your fish?

normally i would say it's impossible for your tank to have fully cycled and produced that many nitrates with only 5 tiger barbs in 1 week

how much do you feed them? fish will often gladly over eat

Yes used old filter media

They get fed once a day in the evening. My test kit says that this level is acceptable.

i will carry out a water change as suggested

Why would this only cause a problem when lights are on though?

When fed they are only fed a little so as they eat it all up without leaving any to fall to the bottom

the light's effect is still perplexing to me- but i've never observed fish exposed to that high of a level of nitrates-

i must assume it is related to the discomfort frm the nitrates

you might post another thread that asks what effects are seen in fish exposed to high nitrates and see if any of our chemists have an answer.

good move seeding the filter too, by the way. Very good for the fishies as you know

I'm still shocked that 5 tigers could produce that much nitrate in a week. . . i wonder if there's something we're missing.

good, good, on the feeding.

i'll keep mulling over this nitrate burst... there is always a reason, right?!

meanwhile yes- water change is the best thing

just out of curiosity what are your amonia and nitrate reading straight out of the tap?

Not tested the tap yet but will give it a go.

i agree i cant get my head around the light issue, but as the fish seem fine with it off at the moment i will leave it that way and try and reduce the nitrate levels.

i'll let you know the progress thanks for the help
