Besenji owners?

I would look into a lab or beagle for kid safe dogs. They would be the top of the list but they will also need lots of exercise as well because they are very active dogs.

Thanks to PF for helping me narrow down some breeds

I have have known several basenjis and they are a lot like cats. They do what they want and are very aloof.
Are you looking into a large dog or a small dog? For large dogs I think retired racing greyhounds make good pets. They are very laid back and gentle, plus you're saving a life.
For small dogs that can be a little tougher. There are so many factors that go into deciding if a small dog is good with kids. Mostly if the child is very young and could potentially hurt the dog. I think a pug would be a good choice. All of the ones I have met have been very friendly, happy, goofy dogs. They do snore and snort but it's kind of cute. They are nice sturdy little dogs.

Im not allowed a ****zu or a bichon of any sort.... >.<

Jack Russel for a small dog, golden or lab retriever for a larger dog. Please do at least visit some dogs in the shelter or foster home. They can give you a good idea about the dog's personality. Just tell them what you are looking for and then go from there.

No dog is better with kids than a Newfoundland. A gentle giant that will make sure that no harm comes to its family.

Just remember Jack Russells have alot of energy and will need to be able to get it out. They are very active dogs.

Woah. Im getting a small dog. We are throughly considering adoption and have been since the start. No jack russels, and no big dogs, as a big dog used to live here and it was wayy too much to handle. All adoption places let you come see the dog, then take it on a day trip to your house to see if it would work out. Unfortunately adoption is more expensive than buying from a breeder, what a bummer. So the big tank is being sold for dog money for the massive adoption costs.
BTW adoption costs about $450+ up here

I just groomed the nicest bichon/shih tzu cross. What a cute little dog and so well mannered!

I love Newfies too but, being a large dog, their lifespan is relatively short and the hip and elbow issues with them are troublesome.

It seems all breeds have their specific health issues sadly.

Good luck on selecting a dog. Catch me in chat again and I'll be happy to help you on temperament issues and selecting a dog. Good luck!
