thanks everyone. I only have 4 tanks so I'll have to weigh the costs of buying the 100mls with the bag to the buying in bulk plus buying the fine mesh bags. The cheapest I've seen the 100 ml with the bag is about 7.50 (free shipping) so we'll see. Thanks again. But I really can't wait to use it
Forgive me Slappy - misunderstood - thought you were referring to my post.
But for the OP's information, it's still a more expensive way of buying Purigen than in loose 'bulk'.
Not a problem, Paul.
For folks that have jumbo tanks 100G+, the jars of Purigen are the only way to go. Buy the amount of Purigen needed for your tank's volume and only one media bag has to be purchased. Using multiple 100mL pillows for a single 100G+ tank would be a waste of money for sure.
Not sure if this helps or not but I get my bags from Michaels. It is a craft/hobby supply type of store. They are the little baggies that are used for weddings. Works perfectly and cheap. I'm using them for crushed coral at the moment.
I use the 100ml pre-packaged bags putting one in each canister filter (all of my tanks have multiple canisters on them). I have a bunch of spare bags and just cycle them in each time I take a canister apart for cleaning.
To the person who talked about almost unlimited recharges, that is not true. Seachem states that Purigen loses about 10% of its abilities each time it is recharged After a half dozen recharges it has already lost 50% of its capabilities.
Yeah, I'm aware of it's ultimately limited use. Probably should have chosen my wording a bit differently. My point was in comparison to other medias like carbon which needs to be replaced at least monthly. Purigen typically needs to be recharged every 4-6 months or so, meaning it should last several years before finally needing to be replaced. I'm still using Purigen I purchased over 2 years ago and it's still working very well after what seems to have been an indefinite number of recharges. Sorry if some folks found that confusing or misleading in some way.
I bit the bullet and bought the purigen media bags. They are way overpriced IMO, but at least they'll hold up long-term being soaked in bleach solution.
