I recommend sticking with Canon or Nikon- they have great track records for quality, durability, and customer service, and also have a huge selection of lenses and accessories for all of their cameras for when (not if) you want to get more involved in photography. They also make high-end DSLR's which will use the same lenses as your entry-level DSLR, so if you decide to go big, you won't have to invest in a whole new set of lenses.
Olympus is also a good make. I've heard mixed reports about Sony. I would avoid any of the other makes; they may be decent cameras, but they're just not in the same league as Canon and Nikon.
You don't necessarily need the current year's model, but don't get one that is too old; I'm already having trouble finding batteries and such for my 5 year old Canon Rebel 300D.
