Can I get some opinions on who thinks what is the absolute best canister filer for a heavily planted 29 gallon

Model #s would be helpful

Is bigger the better?
Thanks

I got a Rena Filstar XP2 for my 36 gallon.

Even though the XP2 is for 75g tanks, the larger canister lets you use more filter media. The XP1 really has room for either the black foam or the ceramic cylinders, but not both. With the XP2 you can have both so you got mechanical and biological filtration.

I am using a Fluval 304 (I think the model number has evolved a bit now), in a moderatly planted tank. Like above it is rated for a much bigger tank but I like that. You could probably get away with a Fluval 204 easily. The Filstars are really good as well and both are a decent price.

I'm using an Eheim Classic 2213 for my 33gal. It was on sale for under 100bucks at bigals. its rated for 66gal

I second the Eheim Classic 2213. I use it on my 29 gallon, and it's simple, easy, cheap, and I think it's build more solidly than Renas and Fluvals - holds quite a bit of media too :) They have it on sale at BigAls for $70 I believe. It's worth every penny.

I use the XP1 on my 20 gallon and I love it. It is easy to start and easy to maintain. Plus it was less expensive then the other canister filters I looked at! For a 29 gallon I would go with the XP2 so that way if you want a somewhat bigger tank in the future you can still use that filter without much trouble. Plus, more filtration never hurts. :)

I was wondering the same thing on getting a canister filter for my 29g. I have lookd at the Rena XP1 & XP2, as well as the Fluval 204. Eheim seems to be on the expensive side. I am sick of powerfilters, they don't seem as efficient.

I think with the Rena Filstars and Ehiem it is a matter of preference. I know on the plant forums they are split on the two. The people who use Filstars swear by them and would never use a Ehiem while Ehiem users would never touch a Filstar filter.

When I was looking at canister filters I was guided away from the Fluval 204 because it is an internal filter and I have a planted tank. I guess plants tend to clog it very easily.

I'm leaning towards the XP2,I want something really quiet.

How quiet are these?

Since I really don't have a basis for comparison (the XP2 is the only canister filter I've ever used), I can't really say how quiet they are compared to other brands. But I can say I can barely hear mine. It's in the living room, and when the TV is on I can't hear it at all.
