best chiclid

Lake Malawi peacocks, Lake Tang Frontosa or Calvus. It's easily possible to mix lakes (not always advised) with african cichlids just make sure they have their proper diet. Most africans arent picky on decoration as long as there are rocks or shelter.

Most cichlids are extremely aggressive so consider that it will be hard to impossible to add fish later once your cichlids are bigger, depending on the type of course.

If your into feeding fish to your cichlids, 2 oscars and a jack dempsey is nice, although they will eventually out grow the tank.

If you want a peaceful community tank 2 angels and 2 parrots would be nice as well.

I find experience a necessity in keeping cichlids, so lots of researchwould be a great start.

Oscars are really great fish. The only two major problems with them are the will outgrow your tank and they tend to pollute the tank very quickly so frequent water changes must be kept up with.

An oscar(Link) would be perfect for a 55 gallon,

Oscars are not ideal for 55g tanks. They usually get around 13 inches... 55g tanks are only 12'' wide, he/she would be cramped and have a hard time turning around.

My first question for which cichlid would be what kind of personality/physical traits do you like?

Color, boisterous, reserved, people oriented?

Personally, I like Tanganyikan rift set ups with smaller species such as N. leleupi, J. Transcriptus, A. calvus etc.
