best external filter for 180

hmm hadnt thought about just leaving in the pipework i have for the rena to drop the water into the sump, though id need to work out what kind of pump to have powering the return water up to the tank. how on earth do i know that? i know to make the syphon into the sump safe i can drill a hole just under the water line to allow air into the pipe if the water level drops too low. i could get a cheap tank and somehow make it into the sump filter, id be thinking probably a 2.5foot tank as i have bracing bars going across the middle of the stand which means i couldnt fit one more than that under the tank, unless i got hubby to modify the stand so i could fit maybe a 4 foot tank under there, would increase the water volume considerably too i guess :)

quick bump just to ask how i figure what kind of pump i need to return the water from the sump to the tank. i am definately thinking sump tank instead of fx5 now as i can add more water volume to the tank which is always a plus. it just depends on how i can figure out the return pump and how much one will cost. thanks.

No don't do this, if you have a power cut your tank would empty over the floor. I would use an overflow box like star_rider said or drill the tank.
Here's a link to a overflow box for sale http://www.onlineaquariumstore.com/acatalog/Aquamedic_Overflow_box__5000l_hour.html
and a link how to diy one http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15733
As for the pump you will need somthing like a ocean runner 6500 http://www.onlinepetsupplies.uk.com/p/714296/ocean-runner-6500-sump-pump.html.

but surely if i drill a hole in the pipe under the water line, when the water drops to the hole air will fill the line and stop the syphon? only the water above the pipe would be able to fill (hopefully not over fill) the sump?

When the power comes back on the pump will pump all of the water from your sump into your tank causing it to overflow onto the floor.

:22_yikes: oooh so did not think of that, hehehe thanks for the heads up, see this is why i come here, to pick the brains of intelligent people, thank you :hi:

its alot better to drill the tank and fit an internal weir if you plan the sump correctly you can have it so the sump wont ovwrflow when the power drops out

also if u just had it coming straight out of the tank u would get a horrible gurgling noise

it is ideal for an overstocked tank and like allready said the bigger sump u get the better

if u spoke to a good local shop im sure they would be able to fit it and drill the tank for a small sum of money (if your not confedent on doing it your self) but drilling the tank is pretty easy just take ur time and it will be cool

this is mine that is under way at the moment but it shows the main part of the work
