The filter I finally decided on was the Duetto 100 Submersible Power Filter. For anyone with a small sand tank, it seems like a good option. The prefilter is built into the filter (instead of trying to add one to a filter not meant to work that way), and the intake does not hang down at all. Plus, because it's submersible, you can place it however you want in your tank. I put it right up near the top of the water where it would be hard for sand to get in it.
Also, the water and debris has to do some traveling within the filter to get to the moving parts, which I am very happy about. We'll see how things go over the next few months but so far it's been working great. It cleared the water right up (filter was broken for a couple of days) and I put some of the old filter media in it to help the good bacteria colonies get started.
