Mostly, though, I just wanted to get the nitrites into the readable range of the test kit...so I didn't go crazy staring at that really dark magenta for weeks on end!

You can always water down your sample say 2 tap : 1 tank, and then triple your reading... though if your nitrites are coming down into readable range (i.e. <5 on AP testkit) you are prob within couple days of the end....
I wonder if the Bio-Spira did it or whether the work coincided with the Bio-Spira infusion?!

It's done!! 0 ammonia and 0 nitrites tonight! I bring it up to 1ppm twice a day...it ate the whole dose from this morning up in two hours! FINALLY.
