I am setting up a new Eheim 2215 Canister Filter on a 37 gallon (high) tank that is heavily planted. What would be the optimal placement for the spray bar? I want to have it below the water line to minimize agitation of the surface.

Do any of you have the spray bar located on the side or positioned vertically rather than horizontally? The tank is set up diagonally in a corner of the room and rarely view the tank from the sides as there are black foam core boards blocking ambient window light on both sides.

Flourite substrate, two Aqualights (72 watts), no C02, One large piece of Malaysian driftwood, Seventeen Neons, four Congo Tetras, three hatchets, three SAEs, three Ottocinclus, two small Clown Loach, one Polka Dot Loach and one Bristlenose Pleco

I also posted this question in the equipment section. However I decided to post it here as well, because I am presently setting it up and wasn't getting any quick replies.

Thanks

I like to put it vertically on the back wall and aim to spray along the back wall as well. Or if possible, I sometimes aim it at the driftwood to disperse it too.

I have two Eheim 2215's going on my 125 that are placed horizontially just below the water surface and the aggitation of the water is fine for the planted aquarium.I have one other Eheim 2215 placed vertically but the flow is dimininished because of it. In this case it is OK because of the other two canister filters and I also have an Aquaclear 500 HOB filter going too. That is a total of four filters on my 125. Because I have so many filters going on the one tank I think it is OK to have the one spray bar placed vertically. However, if it is the only filter you plan on using for that tank I would place it in the horizontal position just below the water line so the water is not aggitated as much and it will cut down on the sound of the filter running on the tank.

I have an older 2nd Nature HOB Whisper Power Filter on the tank that I have been using. Is it best to leave both operating then? I am thinking of positioning the spray bar vertically and aiming the output toward the current from the HOB filter.

It is always better to have more then one filter running on any given tank. That way if one filter goes down for any reason you still have the other filter picking up the slack until the other filter is up and running again.

For a forthcoming planted tank, I was thinking of placing it horizontally along the back, with the holes pointing toward the wall and up at a 45-degree angle. That should provide plenty of flow without agitating the surface too much.

Agreed, Mine runs the length of the tank, with about a 45 degree angle downward, it hits the glass, flows down, and kinda "sweeps" the sand of lost dirt and debris. Works very very well. I have used a spray bar in the vertical position, I was less than pleased with the results.

This is how I have mine setup in conjunction with with a flow diverted AC 70.
